[HEARTFIELD, John] BOGOLEPOV, M.I.
The Soviet Financial System: What it is and how it works.
London: Lindsay Drummond Ltd., 1945.
(185 x 125 mm), pp.; spotting to edges, light crease to corners and nicks to last few pages. Photomontage-illustrated wrappers designed by Heartfield, saddle-stitched; short tears at staple, very lightly rubbed, crease to front cover at corner. Very good.
First edition. Heartfield moved to the UK in 1938 in anticipation of the imminent invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Nazis, having previously fled there from Germany when Hitler came to power in 1933. Whilst in the UK he continued to work as a commercial artist and jacket designer as well as carrying on his anti-Nazi work. The present is one of several books he designed for Lindsay Drummond’s publishing house. Heartfield returned to Germany in 1950 and continued to work for Drummond up until the company closed a few years after the end of the war. Bogolepov was a director of the Financial Planning Division of the State Planning Commission of the U.S.S.R., and author of the financial programme of the First Five-Year Plan.
