Launch event: 29 May 2012, 6:30 – 8:30
OFFSITE: 17 Brook’s Mews, Mayfair, London W1K 4DT

Studio Voltaire has commissioned Pablo Bronstein to produce a solo portfolio of works. This portfolio is the fifth in a series of collaborations with artists to publish innovative and affordable works. This new portfolio consists of a series of 4 etchings featuring Designs for Clocks decorated with Feathers in the Indigenous taste. There are two different variations of the portfolio, a hand tinted version and a more exclusive edition of the untouched etchings.

The portfolio offers an exceptional opportunity to collect a work by an artist whose work is included in major public and private collections worldwide, including Tate Collection, London; Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich and Metropolitan Museum of Art; New York. Proceeds from the sales of editions and portfolios directly support Studio Voltaire’s public programmes.

Pablo Bronstein (born 1977, Buenos Aires) lives and works in London. Solo exhibitions include Sketches for Regency Living, Institute of Contemporary Art, London (2011), Pissoir, Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen (2011), Garden A La Mode, Tate Britain (2010) and Pablo Bronstein at the Met, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2009)

To register your interest in the portfolio, please email editions@studiovoltaire.org.

(264 x 207 mm), pp.[104]. 94 black-and-white photographs, text by Jenicek and Frantisek Modroch. Plain cream wrappers; light handling marks. Black-and-white photo-illustrated dust-jacket, white, text in blue, black, and unprinted white; short tears to top edge, sides rubbed and lightly soiled, small chip to upper side at head of spine. Inscribed by Jenicek in blue ink to first page. Very good.

First edition, a presentation copy inscribed to a judge, simultaneous issue in wrappers. Jenicek, who was himself a Major, is perhaps best known for Dvacet Let and Cesko-Slovenska Armada, his two 1938 books on the Czechoslovakian army which were designed by Ladislav Sutnar. In this book he follows an army ski unit as they complete a course of training at a base in the mountains and then set out on an expedition.

10 vols. (275 x 213 mm), pp.[108]. 1,000 colour photographs. Plain endpapers. Cloth-covered boards (each volume bound in a different colour cloth), spines and upper sides stamped in gilt. Each volume signed and numbered by Waplington in Pencil to front free endpaper. Original black cloth-covered board slipcase. Fine.

First edition, one of 10 sets only. In 1998 Waplington began collecting images that were posted on online photo sharing communities. A large number of these photographs were posted by soldiers and their families. They show life in combat zones, primarily Iraq and Afghanistan, loved ones at home, tomfoolery and many banal moments and unusual objects. To these sourced photographs Waplington has added an unspecified number of his own photographs, and sequenced them so that each of the ten books loosely imagines the life of one soldier.

One set of books was exhibited at the Whitechapel Gallery, London in 2007 where the photographs were also shown in the form of a slideshow accompanied by a live feed from KCEO Radio, San Diego.

2 vols. [Towards the City] (418 × 280 mm), pp.[130], 62 black-and-white photographs printed in gravure, design by Kohei Sugiura. Printed silver endpapers. Black cloth-covered boards, spine lettered in white, silver aluminium disk mounted to upper side; lightly scuffed. Inscribed by Takanashi in black ink to front pastedown. [Note Tokyo-Jin] (256 × 182 mm), pp.[128]. 54 black-and-white photographs. Plain black wrappers with printed label to front. Fine. Both items housed in portfolio box, original black paper-covered boards, black paper strip to spine. A fine copy with a very good example of the scarce original cardboard shipping box.

First edition, a presentation copy, inscribed to Hisato Aikura. Aikura was a critic and director of music at the ‘Pit Inn’, Tokyo’s premier venue for Jazz when it opened in Shinjuku in the mid 1960s. Takanashi was a leading commercial photographer during the Japanese economic boom of the 1960s. Towards the City includes photographs taken in Tokyo, both in the city and in the outskirts some of which were included in issues of Provoke, together with commercial work made whilst on assignment. In the January 1966 issue of Camera Mainichi Takanashi presented a thirty-eight-page spread under the title Tokyoites, in which he attempted to capture Tokyo through a series of fragmented snapshots. Many of these photographs are included in the second volume, Note Tokyo-Jin. Together the two volumes form a brooding and lyrical document showing the effects of Japan’s rapid economic growth and the cost paid by the country as a result of this period of unbridled consumerism.

Takanashi was a founder member of the Provoke Group, alongside photographer Takuma Nakahira, critic Koji Taki and poet Takahiko Okada. ‘Toshi-e… is the last and the most luxurious of the group’s books’ (The Photobook). Its publication effectively marked the end of the Provoke era in Japanese photography.
